Once the pack reaches the shopper, print area stops being a luxury: it is where the logo, the net weight and the barcode live. These four lines solve different balances between print and airflow.
Product that keeps respiring after it is packed needs air on every side or it rots in the middle of the pallet. These barely print, and that is the trade-off.
Polyethylene gives the whole surface to the image. You choose it when the graphic carries the sale and the product tolerates some moisture.
